Copywriting services: Agency, freelancer or dedicated writer? Costs and what you get

Key takeaways

  1. An agency suits a defined project; a freelancer brings specialist help; a dedicated writer handles briefs that arrive every week.
  1. Compare the full price and what it covers. Salary, day rates and agency retainers pay for different kinds of support.
  1. Hiring a remote Copywriter in India can give you consistent capacity at lower cost, with Black Piano handling recruitment and employment.

Your website needs updating. The next campaign needs emails. Someone has promised a blog by Friday, and the person writing it has three other jobs. Sound familiar?

As a growing UK business, you need copy that sounds like you, speaks to customers and actually gets finished. But what's the best way to get it? You could use an agency, work with a freelancer or hire a dedicated Copywriter who becomes part of your team.

Each option gives you a different mix of skills, availability and support. The lowest quote may not be the best value once you need copy every week. We'll compare the costs, the writing capacity you get and how much control you have over the work.

Copywriting services: Which option suits your business?

Choose an agency if you want a team to manage a defined project, such as a website rewrite. Choose a freelancer if you need a particular skill or occasional help. If writing is a regular part of your marketing, a dedicated Copywriter can work through the changing list of pages, emails and campaigns with you.

‍

The deciding question is how often you need someone writing, not just what the next piece of copy will cost.

What are you buying when you pay for copywriting services?

"Copywriting" can mean very different jobs. Before comparing quotes, be clear about what you need:

  • Conversion copy for service pages, adverts and emails gives people a reason to take action.
  • SEO website copywriting brings both together. The writer needs to understand what people are searching for, structure the page around that need and make the next step clear.

That's why a 1,000-word article and a rewritten service page cannot sensibly be priced by word count alone. One might require interviews and fact-checking; the other might need a new message and page structure.

Ask what the price includes: research, strategy, writing, editing and revisions. Otherwise, you could end up comparing a finished page with a first draft.

Agency copywriting services: The managed project option

An agency can take a project from brief to final copy. You work with a lead who coordinates the writers and editors, rather than assigning every page yourself. That can be useful for a website relaunch: the homepage, service pages and emails all need to tell the same story, and somebody needs to keep track of the lot.

Depending on the agency, the service may include:

  • Strategy to agree the audience, message and tone of voice.
  • Writers with different skills for website copy, SEO content or campaigns.
  • Editing to keep the work accurate and consistent.
  • Project management to move several pieces of copy through feedback and approval.

The proposal tells you what you're actually buying. Before you sign, ask who will write the copy, what research they'll do and whether editing is included. Check how many revision rounds you get, who owns the SEO strategy and whether publishing is part of the job. None of those services should be assumed from the word "agency".

For a defined project, outsourcing copywriting to an agency can save your team a fair bit of coordination. You get an agreed scope, a delivery schedule and people responsible for moving the work along. If you'll need new copy every week after launch, include that in the conversation too: a project quote and an ongoing service are different purchases.

Freelance SEO copywriting: The flexible specialist option

With a freelancer, you can look at one person's work, speak to them directly and choose someone with experience that fits your brief. Perhaps you need a landing page for a product launch, an article on a technical subject or sales emails from a writer who knows how to build a campaign. You can commission that skill for the work you need.

The arrangement is usually straightforward:

  • You set the brief and give feedback directly to the writer.
  • You agree a project fee, day rate or retainer, depending on the work.
  • You confirm what is included, such as research, SEO input, editing and revisions.

Freelance SEO copywriting can work particularly well when briefs come in bursts or you need expertise in a specific sector. If you find a writer who understands your business, you can bring them back for future projects without starting from scratch.

As the workload grows, it helps to plan further ahead. A busy freelancer may need time reserved in their diary, and a mix of blogs, adverts and website pages may call for more than one specialist. That is simply part of choosing the right arrangement: work out how much copy you need, how often you need it and who on your team will manage the briefs.

Dedicated writer: The ongoing team option

A dedicated Copywriter works on your business's priorities as part of your team. They join your meetings, follow your content plans and get to know your products, customers and tone of voice. The work changes as your needs change.

In a typical week, they might:

  • Write an SEO service page for a new offer.
  • Draft an email sequence for an upcoming campaign.
  • Update older pages with clearer information and calls to action.
  • Interview a customer or colleague for a case study.

The commercial difference is continuity. You have someone available to work through an ongoing list of briefs, rather than agreeing a new fee and timeline for every article. That makes the option useful when writing is a regular part of your marketing workload.

You still decide what they work on and give feedback, just as you would with any member of your team. And they don't have to do everything themselves. A dedicated writer can work alongside your designer, an agency strategist or a freelance conversion specialist when a project needs those skills.

How much do copywriting services cost in 2026?

The answer depends on what you need written and how often. A one-off website rewrite and a Copywriter available every working day are different purchases, so compare the work included as well as the price.

Agency costs

Agency prices vary with the work involved. A short run of website pages may have a project fee; ongoing writing may be covered by a monthly retainer. For a useful UK benchmark, Clutch lists content marketing agency rates at £60–£120+ per hour, with retainers of £2,500–£10,000+ per month.

Those retainers can cover strategy and distribution as well as writing, so check what is included before comparing them with a copy-only quote.

Freelance costs

For a straightforward web page or blog, a UK price guide puts 1,000 words of copy at £150–£400. That gives you a starting point, though a freelancer may quote by project or day instead.

A sales page that needs customer interviews, a new message and several revisions will take more work than a routine blog of the same length. Ask for a price against the full brief, including research and edits.

UK employee costs

The National Careers Service puts an Advertising Copywriter's annual salary at £24,000 for a starter to £45,000 for an experienced writer. But salary is only part of what the business pays.

Take a £30,000 salary as an example. At the standard 2026/27 employer National Insurance rate of 15% on earnings above £5,000, that adds £3,750. A minimum 3% employer pension contribution on qualifying earnings adds about £713. The total is roughly £34,463 a year, or £2,872 a month, before recruitment, equipment and software.

Dedicated remote employee costs

A dedicated remote Copywriter works as part of your team from another country. You set their priorities and work with them directly. Black Piano finds and legally employs the person, so you can build writing capacity without setting up a company overseas.

For an executive-level Copywriter, the monthly salary is £556 in India compared with ~£2,292 in the UK. That's a 76% saving on salary! And the salary gap holds at senior levels, too.

Why consider hiring a remote Copywriter?

If your business needs copy every week, it makes sense to search beyond the people who can commute to your office. A remote hire gives you a wider choice of writers and a better chance of finding someone whose experience fits the work you need done.

That could mean a Copywriter who knows your sector, can turn customer interviews into case studies, or is comfortable writing both SEO pages and email campaigns. They can join your planning meetings, learn your brand and take ownership of a regular flow of briefs.

India is a strong place to extend that search:

  • Digital marketing experience: India has a busy advertising and content market. Digital advertising revenue grew 26% in 2025, reflecting the scale of work across digital channels.
  • Choice of hiring markets: Mumbai has an established advertising and media sector. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR and Pune give you further places to find marketing professionals with varied experience.
  • More capacity for your budget: With Black Piano, hiring remote digital marketing talent in India can save up to 70% compared with hiring in the UK. That can put a dedicated Copywriter within reach and give your business someone to handle the work each week.

India has specialist English-language Copywriters who can work closely with a UK team. Look at their work, discuss the audiences they have written for and assess how they handle a brief in your brand voice. Black Piano is here to help you pick the right person!

How does hiring a remote Copywriter in another country work?

It depends on whether you want to buy copywriting services or bring someone into your team. A UK business can use a writer based overseas in several ways:

  • Commission a freelancer for agreed pieces of work, such as a landing page or email campaign.
  • Outsource a project to an agency that manages the writing and delivers the finished copy.
  • Hire a dedicated employee who works on the business's priorities each day.

For a dedicated employee, the business needs a way to employ the person under the rules of the country where they work. It could set up its own local company or use an Employer of Record (EOR).

With an EOR, the writer is legally employed by the EOR in their country. The EOR handles the employment contract, payroll, statutory requirements and benefits. Your business chooses the writer, brings them into its workflow and directs their day-to-day work: the briefs, deadlines, meetings and feedback.

That is the key difference from outsourcing an article. When you outsource, you agree what a supplier will deliver. With a dedicated employee, you have a person working with your team across changing priorities, without having to commission every page separately.

How do you check that a writer can deliver for a UK audience?

A strong portfolio is a start, but it should show the kind of work you need. If the role involves SEO service pages, three entertaining blog posts won't tell you enough about how the writer handles a sales page.

Use the same process for every shortlisted candidate:

  • Ask for relevant samples. Look for work aimed at a similar audience, sector or stage of the buying journey.
  • Read beyond the spelling. Is the copy clear and accurate? Does the page answer the searcher's question, sound natural in UK English and make the next step obvious?
  • Discuss their choices. Ask why they structured a page as they did, what they researched and what they would change if it were written for your business.
  • Set a short paid task. Give candidates the same realistic brief, then offer feedback and see how they revise their work.

This gives you a much better picture of how someone will work with your team. When Black Piano helps you hire a Copywriter in India, we source and screen top candidates, but you should still see their work and speak to the people you may hire.

Agency, freelancer or dedicated writer: How do you decide?

Your workloadBest fit
One website rewrite needing strategy and several skillsAgency
Occasional specialist pages or campaignsFreelancer
New writing briefs every weekDedicated writer
Regular content plus major launchesDedicated writer with agency or freelance support

‍

The cost question is how much work keeps coming after the current project. If you're regularly paying for several freelance days a month, compare that spend with the full cost of a dedicated writer. Choose based on the volume of work, the skills it needs and how closely you want to direct it.

How Black Piano helps you build the writing capacity you need

Need someone to take ownership of the writing that keeps landing on your team's desk? We can help you define the role, find the right person and bring them into your workflow. That might be a Copywriter for campaigns and website pages or an SEO Copywriter for search-led content.

For a dedicated hire, we support the whole journey:

  • Find: We source and screen candidates, then help you interview and choose your writer.
  • Hire: We legally employ them in India and arrange their contract, onboarding and equipment.
  • Manage: We run payroll and provide ongoing HR support. You set the briefs, give feedback and direct their day-to-day work.

Our Employer of Record (EOR) service includes recruitment and support after the hire; it goes well beyond overseas payroll.

We also help with short-term freelance hiring when a campaign needs extra hands. If you want to outsource the writing itself, we can build and run a team responsible for delivering the agreed work.

A real case: Building an SEO and copywriting team

A UK marketing agency needed more capacity to serve its growing client base. We began by hiring an SEO Lead, followed by four Senior SEO Executives and three Senior Copywriters. Within six months, we had built a 23-person SEO and copywriting team that worked with the agency's UK operation. The writers were part of a wider, structured team, giving the agency room to take on more client work.

FAQs

Are copywriting services worth paying for if we already use AI?

Yes, if the work needs more than a quick draft. A good writer can interview your customers, find the point you need to make, check claims and edit the copy until it sounds like your business. AI can help with parts of the process, but someone still needs to decide what is accurate and useful.

Is an SEO Copywriter different from a Content Writer?

The roles overlap. An SEO Copywriter usually focuses on pages that need to answer a search query and encourage action. A Content Writer may spend more time on blogs, guides and case studies. In your job brief, list the actual work and skills you need rather than relying on the title alone.

Can an overseas Copywriter write in our UK brand voice?

Yes. Ask for relevant samples, give shortlisted writers the same paid brief and see how they respond to feedback. Once hired, share your tone of voice guide, examples of strong copy and access to the people who know your customers. Brand voice is learned through good briefs and regular feedback.

Do we need to set up a company in India to hire a dedicated writer?

No. You can hire through an Employer of Record (EOR), which legally employs the writer in India and handles local contracts, payroll and employment requirements. Your business chooses the writer and directs their day-to-day work.

Can we keep our agency or freelancers after hiring a dedicated writer?

Of course. Your dedicated writer can handle regular pages, emails and content. An agency can lead a major rebrand, or a freelancer can bring specialist skills to a campaign. Give each person a clear remit so they can work together.
