What is take-home pay?

Take-home pay is the amount an employee receives after all deductions have been taken from their gross salary. Also known as net pay or net salary, it is the money that lands in their bank account on payday.

Common deductions include Income Tax, National Insurance contributions, workplace pension contributions, and other payroll deductions. For employers, understanding take-home pay helps ensure accurate payroll processing and clear salary communication.

How is take-home pay calculated?

Take-home pay is calculated by subtracting all payroll deductions from an employee's gross pay.

Formula: Gross pay − Payroll deductions = Take-home pay

For example:

Description Amount
Gross monthly salary £3,000
Income Tax £320
National Insurance £174
Workplace pension £90
Take-home pay £2,416

In this example, the employee earns £3,000 before deductions. After Income Tax, National Insurance, and pension contributions are deducted, they receive £2,416 in their bank account.

The exact amount will vary depending on salary, tax code, pension contributions, and any other deductions that apply.

What can affect an employee's take-home pay?

Several factors can influence an employee's take-home pay. While gross salary is the starting point, the amount received in their bank account depends on the deductions applied through payroll.

Common factors include:

  • National Insurance contributions
  • Workplace pension contributions
  • Student loan repayments
  • Salary sacrifice schemes
  • Bonuses and overtime payments
  • Changes to tax codes

Take-home pay vs gross pay

Gross pay is the employee's full earnings before deductions, while take-home pay is what remains after tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, and any other payroll deductions.

Feature Gross Pay Take-home Pay
Definition Full earnings before deductions Money received after deductions
Purpose Used as the starting point for payroll calculations Final amount paid to the employee
Includes Includes salary, bonuses and overtime Reflects deductions such as tax and pension contributions
Typical amount Higher figure shown in employment contracts Lower figure paid into the employee's bank account

Why understanding take-home pay matters for employers

The UK is estimated to have around 30.2 million payrolled employees in 2026, according to the Office for National Statistics. With so many employees being paid through PAYE, getting take-home pay right is essential for businesses.

A clear understanding of take-home pay helps employers:

  • Set realistic salary expectations during recruitment
  • Answer employee questions about deductions and net salary
  • Process payroll accurately and remain compliant
  • Improve trust through pay transparency
  • Reduce payroll disputes and payment errors

When employees understand how their take-home pay is calculated, payroll becomes smoother and salary conversations become easier for everyone involved.
